After wisdom tooth surgery: what to do and recovery day by day

What to expect after wisdom tooth removal? In the first 24 hours, mild bleeding, swelling and pain are normal. Most patients return to their usual routine within 3-5 days, while full recovery takes 1-2 weeks. How quickly you heal depends largely on whether you follow the advice below.

The first 24 hours: the most important stage

  • Let the wound rest: the blood clot that forms at the surgical site protects the wound, so do not rinse vigorously, do not suck at the wound and do not use a straw.
  • Apply cold: on the outside of the cheek, with a cold compress wrapped in cloth, in 15-20 minute intervals.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, both impair wound healing.
  • Pain relief: take the medication recommended by your dentist, before the pain intensifies.

Days 2-3: the swelling peaks

The swelling is typically greatest on the second or third day, and this is not a cause for concern. At this point, gentle rinsing with lukewarm salt water can also aid cleaning. When eating, stick to soft, lukewarm foods: yoghurt, cream soups, pureed side dishes. Continue to avoid hot, spicy and crumbly foods.

Days 4-7: a gradual return

The pain and swelling gradually subside, and most people can return to work and light exercise. Continue to avoid strenuous sport. If stitches were placed in the wound, their removal is typically due at this time, and we will arrange an appointment for this at our practice.

When should you see a doctor immediately?

  • if the bleeding does not ease even after 24 hours
  • if the pain intensifies rather than eases after days 3-4 (this may indicate a so-called dry socket)
  • in the event of fever, increasing swelling or difficulty swallowing

In such cases, call our practice on the +36 (20) 527-5547 number.
