What does microscope-assisted root canal treatment mean?
The inside of a tooth is virtually invisible to the human eye, because not enough light reaches down into the root canals. While many dentists carry out root canal treatments with the naked eye, or at best with the help of magnifying loupes, at Smile Expert we prefer to use a surgical microscope. This means our dentists can see the working area at high magnification, and the treatment is carried out with maximum precision.
Microscopic visualisation is of key importance to the success of root canal treatment. For example, in upper molars there is, in a significant proportion of cases, a fourth canal, which is almost impossible to detect and treat without dental magnification equipment. If this canal is left untreated, inflammation can develop at the root tip, commonly known as an abscess.
When is root canal treatment needed?
Root canal treatment usually becomes necessary when the tooth's inner tissue has been irreversibly damaged. The most common warning signs are the following:
- persistent, throbbing toothache that does not go away on its own;
- strong sensitivity to heat or cold that lingers even after the source of the temperature is removed;
- pain when biting down or when the tooth is touched;
- swelling or a feeling of pressure near the affected tooth at the gum;
- inflammation that has developed at the root tip, that is, an abscess, which is often visible on an X-ray.

Why is it better with a microscope?
The main advantage of the microscope-assisted approach is that our dentists can also see what remains hidden to the naked eye. Thanks to this:
- hidden or additional root canals, such as the fourth canal of the upper molars, can also be found and treated;
- the success rate of root canal treatments increases considerably;
- the number and duration of treatments required is reduced;
- healthy tooth tissue is preserved to the greatest possible extent.

The course of microscope-assisted root canal treatment
- Anaesthesia. We carry out the procedure under local anaesthesia so that the treatment is comfortable and pain-free.
- Rubber dam isolation. We isolate the treated tooth from the rest of the oral cavity with a rubber dam, so the working area stays clean and free of saliva.
- Locating and cleaning the canals. Under the surgical microscope we locate all the root canals, remove the dead or inflamed tissue, then clean and disinfect the canals.
- Root filling. We seal the cleaned and shaped canals precisely and densely, so that the infection cannot return.
- Restoring the tooth. At the end of the treatment we restore the tooth with a durable filling or a crown, so that it regains its original function.

Microscope-assisted filling and inlay
Microscopic precision is also an advantage when placing a filling. During a filling we first remove the damaged, decayed part, then prepare the surface for the filling. Microscope-assisted dentistry makes it possible to treat even the smallest areas of decay completely. Small areas of decay can be filled immediately once a sterile surface has been created, and in the case of a larger cavity our dental technicians make an inlay or onlay restoration, which allows a greater proportion of the natural tooth to be saved.

Does microscope-assisted root canal treatment hurt?
We carry out the procedure under local anaesthesia, so the treatment itself is pain-free. The very aim is to remove the inflamed, painful tissue and eliminate the abscess causing the complaint.
How long can it hurt after the treatment?
After the procedure, some temporary sensitivity and a mild feeling of pressure may occur around the treated tooth, which gradually subsides. If the complaint does not go away or gets worse, please contact our practice.
