Teeth grinding (bruxism): its signs, causes and treatment
What is bruxism? Teeth grinding and clenching mostly occur during sleep, unconsciously, which is why many people are unaware of it for years while the teeth wear down and the jaw joint becomes overloaded. The good news: the problem is very treatable, most often with a custom-made bite-raising splint.
What signs might point to teeth grinding?
- morning headache, tension around the temples
- tired, tense chewing muscles on waking
- worn, shortening tooth edges, tiny enamel cracks
- increasing tooth sensitivity
- clicking and pain in the jaw joint
- your partner notices the sound of night-time grinding
What causes it?
Bruxism is most often caused by stress and tension, but a bite abnormality, certain sleep disorders, and increased consumption of some stimulants (caffeine, nicotine) can also play a role. Identifying the triggers is part of the treatment.
Why is it dangerous if left untreated?
Beyond enamel wear, continuous overloading can lead to cracked teeth, damage to dental restorations, gum recession and lasting damage to the jaw joint. For the investigation of joint complaints, our practice offers instrument-based jaw joint diagnostics as well.
How can it be treated?
- Bite-raising splint: a custom, impression-based splint worn at night that protects the teeth from wear and relieves the joint. This is the most common and most effective first step.
- Correcting the bite: if it is caused by a dental misalignment, the solution may be adjusting fillings and restorations or orthodontics.
- Stress management: reducing mental tension (exercise, sleep routine, relaxation) is the most useful complement alongside the splint.
Frequently asked questions
Does teeth grinding occur in children too?
Yes, it is relatively common in childhood, and children often grow out of it. If it persists, it is worth having a dentist check it.
How long does it take to make a bite-raising splint?
After taking an impression, it is made in the dental laboratory, typically within a few working days. Its price can be found in the price list here.
