Why does tartar form, and how often should it be removed?

Why does tartar form? The soft plaque that sticks to the teeth begins to calcify within a few days from the mineral salts in saliva; this hardened layer is tartar, which can no longer be removed with a toothbrush. Most patients should come for professional scaling 1-2 times a year.

Why is tartar dangerous?

The surface of tartar is rough, making it an ideal foothold for bacteria. Tartar building up along the gumline causes gum inflammation, which if untreated can worsen into periodontal disease: the gums recede, the teeth may become loose, and eventually they may even be lost. Tartar also causes bad breath and an aesthetic problem.

Why is brushing not enough?

Careful brushing removes the soft plaque and thereby slows the formation of tartar, but it is not enough for the already calcified layer. Tartar also forms in places (between the teeth, the inner surface of the lower front teeth, the areas below the gumline) that the toothbrush can reach only with difficulty.

How does professional scaling work?

1. Ultrasonic scaling: the vibration of the ultrasonic device gently chips the tartar off the tooth surface.
2. Air-Flow salt polishing: a fine powder-particle water jet removes surface stains (coffee, tea, tobacco).
3. Polishing: plaque also sticks back less easily to the smoothly polished tooth surface.
