The process of root canal treatment: how long does it take, and what to expect afterwards?

How does root canal treatment work? During the treatment, the inflamed or dead pulp inside the tooth is removed, the root canals are cleaned and disinfected, and then sealed airtight. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, typically requires 1-3 visits, and is often the last chance to save the tooth before extraction.

When is root canal treatment needed?

Most often when deep decay has reached the pulp and it has become inflamed. A telltale sign is throbbing toothache that intensifies at night, prolonged sensitivity to cold and heat, discolouration of the tooth or swelling around the tooth. It is important to know: the temporary disappearance of symptoms does not mean the inflammation has healed; after the pulp dies, the process can continue to spread without any symptoms.

The steps of the treatment

1. Anaesthesia and isolation: we anaesthetise the tooth, then isolate it so that saliva and bacteria cannot get into the canals.
2. Opening and cleaning the canals: we remove the inflamed pulp and shape and disinfect the canals.
3. Root filling: we seal the cleaned canals airtight.
4. Restoration: after the treatment the tooth is given permanent protection with a filling or a crown.

Why is microscopic root canal treatment worthwhile?

The root canals of a tooth are only partly visible to the naked eye; the odd side canal can easily remain hidden, and any inflammation left behind can later cause trouble again. This is why, at our practice, we carry out root canal treatment under an operating microscope: with the multiple magnification, even the tiniest canal can be discovered and cleaned.

What can you expect after the treatment?

In the days following the treatment, the area around the tooth may be sensitive to biting; this is normal and can be managed well with a painkiller. If the pain intensifies over several days, or swelling appears, be sure to let our practice know.
