Tartar removal with a scaler at our practice consists of the following steps:
- Examination and assessment: The dentist or dental hygienist first examines the teeth and gums and assesses the amount and distribution of tartar.
- Use of the ultrasonic scaler: The dentist or hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler, which uses vibrations to loosen and remove the tartar. The ultrasonic scaler helps to remove the tartar effectively without damaging the tooth enamel.
- Refining and polishing: Once the tartar has been removed, the dentist or hygienist refines and polishes the teeth to remove surface stains and create a smooth, shiny surface.
- Information and advice: The dentist or hygienist can provide information on proper oral hygiene practices, such as correct brushing and flossing techniques. They can also give advice on how to reduce the formation of tartar by visiting the dentist regularly and maintaining proper oral hygiene practices.
Tartar removal with Air Flow
The Air Flow system is a more modern approach to tartar removal, which cleans the teeth in an effective and gentle way. The Air Flow system uses air, water and fine bicarbonate of soda powder to remove tartar and plaque from the teeth.
Steps of the Air Flow procedure:
- Preparation: The dentist or dental hygienist first examines the teeth and gums to assess the amount of tartar and the need for cleaning.
- Application of bicarbonate of soda powder: Using the nozzle of the Air Flow system, fine bicarbonate of soda powder is blown onto the teeth and into the areas between the teeth. This powder helps to loosen the tartar and remove it from the surface.
- A mixture of air and water: The Air Flow system immediately also blows air and water onto the teeth to rinse away the dissolved tartar and plaque.
- Ultrasonic scaler: Sometimes the Air Flow system is also combined with an ultrasonic scaler in order to clean the teeth even more effectively and thoroughly.
- Refining and polishing: As the final step of the procedure, the dentist or hygienist refines and polishes the teeth to remove surface stains and give them a smooth, shiny appearance.
The advantages of the Air Flow system include that it is less invasive than other traditional methods, and it removes tartar quickly and effectively. In addition, the sprayed bicarbonate of soda helps to restore the whiteness of the teeth. When using the Air Flow system, less water is needed and there is less need to touch the teeth, so the procedure can be gentler for people with sensitive gums or tooth enamel. However, the Air Flow system is not always suitable in every case, and the dentist decides which method to use based on the patient's individual needs.
